John 13:1-17:26

Today, we will be looking at a remarkable promise, The Holy Spirit, given to us by God The Father. The Spirit is a part of the God head. God is three persons in one. This is what is called the Trinity. The Spirit is one of those three persons. Throughout the scriptures The Spirit has an active role. We will be looking at the aspect of The Spirit given to live within those who believe in Jesus and love Him by God The Father.

In Chapter 13:1-17:26 in the book of John, Jesus spent the Passover meal and the last night that He would be with the disciples before His death on the cross. He begins to prepare the disciples for The Holy Spirit to come in His physical absence.

John 13:1 states that Jesus knew that His hour had come. The purpose of Him coming to earth was to die for the sins of the world by taking the punishment of sins upon Himself, and this was going to take place the next day. That would mean that He would be leaving this world without the disciples and going to be with The Father. However, He would not leave them alone and abandon them.

Jesus begins to reassure the disciples that, even though He would not be with them in bodily form, The Holy Spirit would come and live in them. They would not be left alone. In John 14:17, He assures them that The Spirit will be in them and in John 14:26 that The Father will send The Spirit to teach them all things and bring to remembrance all that Jesus had taught them, as well as, in John 16:13, that The Spirit will lead them in all truth.

We see later that the promise of The Spirit was received in John 20:22, Acts 2:4, and Acts 10:45 not just by the disciples but also by other Jews and Gentiles alike. The Spirit was given to all that believed Jesus was sent from The Father for the forgiveness of sins.

How does this relate to us? If you believe Jesus was sent for the forgiveness of all your sins then The Spirit is given to live within you. The rest of your days can be spent worshiping and love God with your life.

What an amazing truth that the God of creation has given us His Spirit to live within us. It is amazing to think that the God actually lives within us. The One Who holds all things together. We are never alone. He is with us, always. We have a friend in God to turn to all the time in every circumstance to guide and lead us.

May God continue to deepen our understanding of this wonderful relationship that we have with Him.

Peace in Him alone, daniel

Here are some other verses that talk about The Spirit of God living in us. There are other verses that don’t use the words “in”; “dwells”, “full”, or “filled” about The Spirit but it is assumed by the writer that the understanding of the reader is that He is living in us. I have not included those verses.

THE SPIRIT LIVING IN US: Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.

Acts 7:55 But being full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God;

Acts 9:17 So Ananias departed and entered the house, and after laying his hands on him said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

Acts 11:24 for he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And considerable numbers were brought to the Lord.

Acts 13:9 But Saul, who was also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze on him,

Acts 13:52 And the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

1 Corinthians 3:16 Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

1 Corinthians 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?

2 Cor 2:20 For as many as are the promises of God, in Him they are yes; therefore also through Him is our Amen to the glory of God through us. 21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God, 22 who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.

Galatians 4:6 Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”

1 Thessalonians 4:8 So, he who rejects this is not rejecting man but the God who gives His Holy Spirit to you

2 Timothy 1:14 Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you.

James 4:5 Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: “He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us”?

1 John 3:24 The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

1 John 4:13 By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.
