What wonderful words given to us about God’s promise of His involvement in the lives of people concerning the New Covenant. From the time Moses gave The Law of God (Deuteronomy 4) to the time period of Ezekiel and Jeremiah, the Old Covenant was established by God. When Moses read the Old covenant to the people of Israel, they stated they would obey the commands given by God but would eventually and often break that vow and their agreement with the covenant with God. It was by God’s tender mercies, compassion, and faithfulness to His promise given to Abraham that He did not destroy the people for their disobedience and sin before Him. God had established with Abraham that righteousness was given to him because he believed God (Genesis 15:6). However, God had a plan that would take care of mankind’s inability to be faithful to Him. He would make a New Covenant and He would be The One that would fulfill the Covenant promise in those who believe Him.
In Jeremiah 31:31-34, God tells of a future time when He will make a New Covenant not like the one before that He made with the people of Israel when Moses brought the 10 commandments to them from Mount Sinai (Exodus 34). Which stated that if they obeyed the commandments then He would be their God. However, the people were unfaithful to the covenant between them and God. Note: In Galatians 3:24, we understand that the law was a tutor for us to know that we could not attain righteousness or be faithful on our own strength and that we would need a Savior and that being Jesus. But now He states what He is going to make a New Covenant and that He will be their God and they will be His people. Also, that they will know Him and He will forgive their iniquity and remember their sin no more.
Let us focus in on the second half of verse 33. How reassuring it is to those who believe this truth from God that He is going to personally write His laws upon the heart. He takes the responsibility into His own hands and assures that the New Covenant will not be broken again. What God does lasts forever. It is His nature to be faithful to His promise and words. Since He is The One Who is personally writing His law on our hearts, we can confidently know that this will be an everlasting covenant and will not be broken.
What assurance that we have as believers in Jesus that God will place within our hearts His desires and that He will write and work out those desires in our hearts through His Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). We no longer have to try to be a “better” person before God because we are unable to do that on our strength. In Isaiah 64:6 we read, “all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment” What we can’t do God wants to do in us.
Let us together trust Him, walk in obedience to His leading, and rest in His promises and working within our hearts, as He changes us more and more into His image.
Praises to our God!!
